About Omkareshwara Temple

🏛️ Sacred Abode of Lord Shiva

Omkareshwara Temple is one of the most significant and architecturally unique temples in Coorg, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in 1820 by King Lingarajendra II, this temple stands as a remarkable example of Indo-Islamic architecture, blending Hindu temple traditions with Islamic architectural elements.

The temple is located in the heart of Madikeri town and is easily accessible to visitors. It features a distinctive dome structure, minarets, and a prayer hall that reflects the cultural synthesis of the region during the colonial period.

📜 Historical Significance & Legend

According to local legend, King Lingarajendra II built this temple to atone for a sin he committed. The king had killed a Brahmin who was a close friend, and to seek forgiveness, he was advised to build a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was constructed with the unique architectural style that we see today.

The temple's name "Omkareshwara" is derived from "Om" (the sacred sound) and "Ishwara" (Lord), symbolizing the cosmic sound and the supreme deity. The temple has been a center of spiritual activity and cultural significance for over two centuries.
